Hiooo!! The pipeman was able to sit down with DMPE to talk to us about the world of Mic Terror. If you’re not familiar with Mic T, you should crawl out from the rock now. He has worked with M.I.A., Gym Class Heroes, GLC and performed with Twista, A-Trak, EPMD and more. He’s not only one of the most talented rappers in the New School but he’s an entertaining person in general.

So I am still working on these interviews so bear with me

(Laughs) It’s all good 

So, Chicago hip-hop has evolved over the past few years, what do you attribute to the evolution?

I am part of that evolution. I am a big part of the changing of the scene and where Chicago hip hop is going now especially the underground. Chicago has just always been a melting pot of sounds, the amalgam of every coast and side. Every spot in the country comes out in the styles of Chicago artists and this scene is just a way it comes out.

How were you involved in the scene back before this current New School?

How the scene was it was separated by the gangstas and backpackers and mu’fuckers like pop artists. I never fit in with the gangstas or backpackers completely but fucked with both groups and over time people started following that same direction I was going in which created a new movement. Other people that were like that (The Cool Kids, Kidz in the Hall, etc) started flocking to our group and after time we had a scene and it became the dominant scene in Chicago, like its killing every other scene right now.

I know this question is old now, but for the record give me your stance on the “hipster” issue

Okay….my official stance is….we will use the word “hipster” until we find another word for it (laughs). It is just a stamp with no meaning basically the word hipster means weird guy as far as rap is concerned. It’s like “dudes not a gangster or backpacker, so he’s a hipster” its where they place people that can’t be defined. Like I wont call myself a hipster but I will turn around if you say it. It’s like if the police say “nigger”, I wont like it but i know your talking to me.

You’ve climbed the ladder of local success and have gained much notoriety in the Chicago music scene, what’s next?

The world….I am striving to be the biggest rapper in the world….literally. I’m coming for Kanye and Wayne’s spot. Like Jay-Z, 50, all of them….I am coming for their spot, trying to stand as an equal to those people.

Should people hate Mic T?

People should do whatever they want to do and if thats hate me, than thats more power to you. People love me and people hate me, thats how it is with everything.

Do you want to stir controversy? 

I was kind of looking forward to that “mu’fuckers steam rollin my shit” stuff one day but now they gotta buy it to steam roll it so….(laughs). But yeah, I want to bring back an edge to hip-hop, it’s gotten to be to soft and calm. Like anything I say on wax is what I say in my living room, I don’t hold my tongue. It’s therapeutic to me to just get it out through this music, trying to exercise my demons an put them in other people (laughs).

What’s up with a record deal?

It’s too early to say anything really, but there is something in the works

Any shows people can catch you at soon?

The West Coast Tour is in April from the 13th to the 20th. Every city along the coast, Vancouver to Mexico City and every city, town and spot near you….Los Angeles, Riverside, Seattle, all those shits. Then it’s down in Miami for Winter Music Conference, and always be looking for me to hold a show down in the Chi.

Any other words?

Fuck the establishment….Police, security guards, bouncers at clubs….

Yeah a bouncer took my ID the other night

Oh man, double fuck bouncers at the club (laughs)….Fuck deans at schools….Fuck campus security….Fuck any officer with a gun, flashlight, whatever….Fuck the DEA….

Living in a city that is currently working itself into the position of national spotlight is great. With Barack Obama in office and a new Trump Tower, the US definitely has its nose pressed against the glass surrounding Chicago. And with that comes lot of great attention on the cultural happenings in Chicago, especially the music scene. With artists like The Cool Kids, Hollywood Holt and Kidz in the Hall starting to gain mainstream notoriety, the New School Hip-Hop scene in the city has been boosted.  One of the young, talented artists that has gotten some much due attention from this is DJ/Producer Chaise Marcel, who has been an acquaintance of mine for about a year now. He is featured on the new DJ Benzi mixtape “DJ Benzi Presents: The US Open Amplitude Mixtape Hosted by Lil Jon” that you can download below. Chaise took some time out of his schedule to talk to DMPE about his recent success.

2008 was a dope year for you, being included with DJ Benzi’s mixtapes and having a plethora of remixes….Whats up for 2009, rumor is something about Britney Spears?

Thank you sir….. Haha. Yea…. Still a lil undecided on that project. Jive hasn’t given full confirmation etc on the decision yet. But if they do, you will def have a Britney x Chaise Marcel on your iTunes store

Anything coming up with Benzi? You guys seem to have made a good working connection.

Yea. Benzi is really supportive of my work. I greatly appreciate it. Tonight Benzi is releasing a brand new mixtape that I’m on…. There’s a remix on there that I did for The Cool Kids, and I’m the only producer/dj with the studio files to the original song. So its gonna sound dope. But nonetheless this release Is just another from many more to come w/ Benzi.

Are you working with any other mixtape Dj’s right now?

Not so much on the mixtape dj side… I’m working closely w/ my brother Mano on a couple new things that he and I are collabing on. I’ve been on a few other mixtapes tho aside Benzi’s.

You seem to always be twittering….I noticed you even twittered about this interview right now haha, when did you get bit by the Twitter bug?

Haha. Yea I think Twitter is a great way to keep people updated on things. I’m too lazy to write a blog unfortunately. So I try to announce every move I make via Twitter. I came to Twitter when the Stephen Colbert x Kanye Twitter situation happened. Saw alotta peeps I know were on there so I joined. Plus with me having 5000 friends on facebook thus getting 60 messages and invites per day, its like fresh air.

Haha yeah Facebook gets out of control sometimes with all that.

Who are you paying attention to on the music scene right now? Who’s about to break out?

Benzi put me on Mike Posner.. He’s got a good sound. I know Dave Coresh is about to shut some shit down. He Say, She Say’s music is really next level. Drake. Slot A’s production is cold. I would add Mic Terror to this list but I view him as beyond it so.. Haha. There’s alotta talent out here right now. This year should be interesting for music.

And Donnis. I kid you not. The stuff he’s about to hit yall with is in-sane.

Haha I used to think Donnis was Mano, as I’ve heard alot of people do.

Yea. And vice versa, Its because of the Cazal 858 x Swagger glasses they both got in Tokyo frm Big O

Haha what about the party scene? What happenings can someone find Chaise Marcel DJing at in the near future?

I DJ at Blue Star Lounge april 1st…. But I’ve been layin low due to production. Now that I’ve caught up with some projects I’m gonna go back into the clubs. You all can rest assure that “TREATED” as a collective will be DJng in your city much sooner than you think. Can’t give details on that but, let’s just say its not just a word anymore.

What were some of the craziest parties/nights you’ve recently DJd at?

As of recent , I did Jugrnaut’s 1Year Anniversary party. Madness. Capacity at like 11:30 and a crowd outside.

Yeah that party was pretty crazy, I heard alot of people got it in in the bathroom.

Haha. Didn’t even know about that one. I guess a deed was done on my part.

Haha is there anything you want to plug? Nows the time.

I have songs droppin this spring and summer by the ton. Mic T, Chip tha Ripper, Hollywood Holt, Dave Coresh, more benzi tapes, donnis. List is long. I’m planning to release a mixtape tht includes new and old remixes I did, cuz peeps are saying they want em in their ipods. The Treated DJs will be coming to numerous locations/cities. As well as my Dj duo with Mikey Rocks. Its a good year indeed for a “Noir Connoisseur” (hint).
